Studies show that employers continue to place a high value on the core competencies veterans hone during their military service as organizations of all sizes commit look to embrace veteran employment initiatives.  However, challenges such as cultural fit, and skills misalignment lead to retention challenges as 65% of veterans leave their first post-separation job within the first two years.  An investment in a strong and effective military hiring initiative starts with ensuring adequate resources are dedicated to including empowering HR professionals and leaders throughout the process. The SHRM Foundation believes that veterans are valuable members of our workforce, and this initiative will help HR professionals attract, hire and retain members of the military community.  This presentation will demonstrate how to effectively build and manage a veteran employment Initiative that aligns our HR community’s commitment to building the best workforce possible with some of the best talent available.  This SHRM Foundation program has empowered thousands of HR professionals and organizations to truly leverage the talent and commitment of our veteran workforce. 

Presented by: Andrew Morton, SHRM, Director of Veterans and Certification Affairs

Andrew works with the military and veterans' organizations to develop workforce readiness pathways for veterans and military-families. As part of SHRM’s Speaker’s Bureau Andrew informs and empowers organizations in their inclusion-hiring efforts across many populations including Returning Citizens as part of SHRM’s Getting Talent Back to Work Initiative.  He is the contributing author of “From We Will to At Will- A Handbook for Veteran Hiring, Transitioning and Thriving in Today’s Workplace.”  Andrew previously served as public relations director for a PR firm in Alexandria. 

Andrew, a retired Infantry-Officer, served in leadership roles during multiple overseas and combat tours (Iraq, Bosnia, Macedonia and Egypt) in his 21-year Army career. He also served as the Chief of Marketing and Advertising for the Army Reserve.
