Mohawk Valley Society for Human Resource Management (MVSHRM) is a non-for-profit organization that has been serving local Human Resource professionals for over 15 years. Formerly known as the Central New York Human Resource Managers Association (CNYHRMA), in 1999 the organization changed its name to identify itself more closely with the Mohawk Valley and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), thus becoming MVSHRM. As an affiliate of SHRM, MVSHRM support SHRM'S primary objective to advance the interests of the HR profession by serving its global membership of over 165,000.
MVSHRM consists of over 220 individual members from various businesses throughout the Mohawk Valley including HR Directors, Recruiters, Benefit Administrators, HR Assistants, Trainers and more. Approximately 60% of our members are national SHRM members and 15% of them are certified as a Professional in Human Resource Management (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resource Management (SPHR). Our members influence the daily work issues that affect all of our lives such as recruitment, health benefits, payroll/compensation, and strategic planning for the companies we're employed at. The purpose of the organization is to provide these Human Resource professionals opportunities for professional development, networking, and recognition within the Human Resource field.
MVSHRM is led by a board made up of five individuals elected by the membership and the immediate Past President to serve as the Executive Committee which is comprised of President, President Elect, Vice-President Membership, Vice-President Programs, Treasurer (and Past President Elect) as well as Standing Committee Chairpersons, including Legislative, Public Relations and Communications,Sponsorships, Special Events, Student Liaison, and Hospitality Director. Each year these members volunteer their time to set and obtain goals that meet the needs of the membership and the expectations of SHRM as an affiliate of their organization.
MVSHRM conducts regular business meetings on the third Tuesday of the following months: January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December. Business meetings serve as a networking opportunity for members, a platform to share important information relevant to the HR field, and address the needs of the organization. In addition to the regular business meeting, an educational presentation is made by a guest speaker with breakfast, lunch or dinner for a reasonable fee. Throughout the year we also host special events such as the annual scholarship award to two local college students, half-day seminar, a golf outing, holiday party, and the Ursula Flagg Awards for Human Resource Excellence.
Although the membership includes mostly HR professionals, it is also an ideal organization for businesses that do not employ a full time HR staff person but obviously need to perform HR functions as a part of doing business. Guests are always welcome at business meetings but we highly encourage them to join for a small annual membership fee. Membership includes invitations to all meetings and special events at a discounted rate, announcements of various job openings, professional development opportunities and more.
